A Contextual Analysis of Community Radio Programming and Peace Promotion in Political Campaigns in Kenya: A Case of Migori County
(New Media and Mass Communication, 2018-03-09) Mac' Ouma, Enock; Kinya, Henry; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai; Oluoch, John
With their ability to reach and influence a large number of people, community radios wield immense power in shaping the course of political discourse and contestations. Although many examples of the media’s negative contribution to escalation of violence and conflicts exist, fair and accurate journalism that builds confidence and counteracts misperceptions has the potential to transform and prevent political violence. Migori County is listed by the National Commission on Integration and Cohesion(NCIC) as one of the political violence hotspots in Kenya. The aim of this study was to investigate both programme genre and broadcast content of three community radios in the region. The objectives of the study were: To establish whether Milambo Radio 103.8 FM, Radio Tarumbeta 90.4 FM and Radio Rameny88.3 FM have programmes designed for promoting peaceful political campaigns in Migori County; to determine the extent to which such programmes are used in promoting peaceful political campaigns and to explore strategies through which the programmes may be made more effective in promoting peaceful political campaigns. The study used face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Agenda Setting Theory supported by the Media Effects Theory were used.

A Study of Terrorism Discourse in TaifaLeo Newspaper of Kenya
(Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, 2013-03-10) Owala, Silas Odhiambo; Indede, Florence; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai
Terrorism is a global concern and usually elicits a lot of sensationalism every time it occurs. The media often finds itself in the middle of debates over this issue. Apart from the role of informing the public, the media has a responsibility of avoiding the creation of animosity amongst the readers. The choice of language used by the media can create a negative attitude towards one another among the readers and the public in general. This research investigated discourse on national and international terrorism in Taifa Leo, a daily published in Kiswahili language in Kenya. The main objective was to analyze the language used in reporting terrorism news in the newspaper. The intention was to find out how the language used in those specific news items created bias in presentation of terrorism news. The parts of the newspaper that had reports on terrorism were isolated and analyzed over a period of one year. The study revealed that there was bias in the way this newspaper reported terrorism news. The biases that were noted were mostly caused by discourse structures that were provided by either the reporters or the sources they quoted.

An Exposition of Some Adapted Lexemes in Dholuo
(Linguistics and Literature Studies, 2013-03-10) Okal, Benard Odoyo; Indede, Florence; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai
The paper gives an exposition of some adapted English lexemes into Dholuo. The work relied on a descriptive design. Total purposive sampling technique was incorporated in collecting secondary data to saturation level. All the adapted nominal lexemes from the English Dholuo Dictionary (EDD) were collected, qualitatively analyzed, edited and presented thematically by showing the adapted lexemes in various areas. The results indicate that adapted lexemes in this lexicographical work are manifested in the following areas: religion, people, subjects, places, measurements, clothing, vegetables, foodstuff, equipment, vehicles and months. We have gathered that as we adapt some lexemes from English into Dholuo, then phonemes such as /ʃ (sh), z/ automatically change to /s/, /v/ changes to /f/ and /q/ changes to /k/. We have concluded that English consonant phonemes such as / ʃ (sh), z, v, q/ are not manifested in Dholuo. Therefore, translators have to adapt them by using both the transference and naturalization translation procedures in order to achieve the desirable translated text.

(International Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2018-07-09) Kavoi, Jackson Mutuku; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai; Mwenda, Mukuthuria
This study investigated students’ attitudes towards the use of Kiswahili in teaching communication skills in technical institutes, in Kenya. An adapted communication skills attitude scale was used as a tool for measuring attitudes. Also, 5 institutions and 148 respondents were involved. A descriptive survey design and SPSS data analysis tool was used. 2.82% of 142 respondents depicted negative attitudes, while 97.18% were positive about being taught Communication Skills in Kiswahili. Alongside, students pursuing arts-related courses posted low positive attitudes compared to the science ones. Likewise, the diploma students reflected low positive attitudes compared to the certificate ones, hence the level of study had no attitudes influence towards the use of Kiswahili in teaching communication skills. The reason behind the positivity and difference in attitudes, was feeling of incompetence, hence the need to sharpen their communication skills. Contrary, the gender factor influenced attitudes towards the use of Kiswahili in teaching communications skills

An analysis of the competence in literary criticism among Kenyan secondary school students: a case study of Wareng' district, Uasin Gishu county
(Scholarlink Research Institute, 2012-10-01) Wambua, Pauline Ndave; Indede, Florence; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai
This paper is based on a study that examined the level of competence in literary criticism among students in Forms Two, Three and Four, based on the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in Wareng District of Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The author argues that students’ exposure to literary knowledge and the competent use of figurative language can enhance performance in literature in Kiswahili and the general performance of the Kiswahili subject. The pragmatic theory, which recognizes that practical approach is the core foundation for building competence in whichever field, which then puts students at the centre of the acquisition of competence’s process, was used. The theory postulates that any system of education that is in place should be reviewed from time to time in order to be at par with the changes that are witnessed in everyday life. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Data from the questionnaires was analysed using a descriptive method and percentages. The findings showed that students had a lower ability in identifying and explaining the meaning and usage of terminologies that are commonly used during the criticism and analyzing of Kiswahili literature text books. This paper makes recommendations on the structures to mitigate the challenge of competency in literary criticism devices among Kenyan secondary school students. Bearing in mind that society thrives by communication, which is achieved by proper use of language, the study generates useful knowledge to teachers, students and scholars in the literary field on the need to come up with ways of improving competence in literary criticism.

(CHAKITA, 2021-11-26) Malugu, Alfred; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai; Mulokozi, Mugyabuso Mlinzi

Effective Communication for Inclusivity in Working towards the Attainment of Beta and Vision 2030.
(International Journal of Humanities and Social Studies, 2025-11-30) Wakahia, Samuel Kairigo; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai
The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of communication as an inclusivity strategy for achieving Beta and Vision 2030. The objectives were to assess the level of awareness of the Beta and Vision 2030 agendas, to analyse the uptake of the Beta and Vision 2030 strategies among Kenyan Citizens, and to propose better communication modalities that can enhance and bring on board citizen participation. A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was adopted for this study. An online questionnaire was used to collect data through a selected sample of respondents. In total, 200 respondents participated in the survey. Quantitative aspects of the data were analysed using SPSS, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate that while communication efforts have achieved broad awareness of Vision 2030 and, to a lesser extent, the BETA initiative, they fall short in deepening public understanding and fostering a sense of inclusive participation. While communication has raised awareness, it has not translated into widespread access, participation, or engagement with the BETA and Vision 2030 strategies. Citizen participation in BETA and Vision 2030 remains constrained by several communication barriers, including inadequate outreach, mistrust, low literacy, and limited access to inclusive platforms. The findings emphasise that achieving Beta and Vision 2030 requires a communication framework that is inclusive, adaptable, and responsive to the needs of all individuals, ultimately leading to sustainable and equitable development.

Itikadi za Ujinsia katika Maumbo ya Majina ya Kikuria
(Ruwaza Afrika, 2023-03-11) Kasuma, Roseline; Ogola, James; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai

Kenyan Technical Students’ Views on the Role of Kiswahili in Technical Education
(International Journal of Innovative Research & Development, 2019-01-09) Kavoi, Jackson Mutuku; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai; Nyandiba, Carren
In Kenya, Kiswahili is taught in almost all levels of education, both in public and private institutions, except technical institutes. Therefore, its role is not explicitly explored in these institutions. However, it plays uncategorized important roles by the sidelines of the technical education curriculum and therefore, its importance cannot be underrated. It is out of this realization that this study, embarks on establishing the views of students of technical institutes on the importance of Kiswahili language in technical education. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, sampling 148 students and 20 instructors from 5 technical institutions. The study used questionnaires and structured interview guides to collect data. The content analysis method was majorly used to analyze the data obtained. The findings revealed that Kiswahili plays a very important role by the sidelines of the technical education curriculum. Currently, Kiswahili is not the medium of instruction in technical institutes, however course instructors, use it to expound complex concepts, especially among the certificate students. Additionally, itis widely used in academic discussions when students are preparing for internal and external examinations. Also, counselors use it as a guidance and counseling tool, and it is the preferred language for service delivery in the field among other roles. This study also found out that Kiswahili is the language of communication among the students. Out of these important roles played by Kiswahili as revealed by the students, this study recommends that the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology (MOHEST), in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) works on a strategy to introduce teaching of Kiswahili language as a subject to technical institutes’ students. By so doing, they will be supporting the academic and social roles that Kiswahili plays by the sidelines of the technical education curriculum. Finally, further research can be conducted on the comparison of attitudes of technical institutes’ students towards both Kiswahili and English in view of using Kiswahili as the medium of instruction among certificate students

Kufaa Kwa Nadharia Ya Uchanganuzi Vijenzi Katika Uchambuzi Wa Hiponimia
(Kiswahili, 2014-03-09) Okal, Benard Odoyo; Indede, Florence; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai

Language Attitudes and Kiswahili Language Learning in Primary Schools in Kenya
(Journal of Education and Practice, 2020-07-31) Wamalwa, Eric W.; Mohochi, Ernest Sangai; Odeo, Isaac Ipara; Miruka, Frida A.
Kiswahili and English are two important languages taught and examined at the national level in Kenya’s education system. Students’ academic performance in the subjects keeps varying in national examinations. Different from English, however, poor performance in Kiswahili is more often associated with negative attitudes. Nevertheless, empirical validations have in most cases, not been established. The present study explores pupils’ attitudes toward Kiswahili in the context of second language learning in Siaya County of Kenya. The study is anchored on the assumption that although language attitudes play a big role in second language learning and development, primary school pupils have often been neglected in the investigation of language attitudes despite the fact that Kiswahili language learning and teaching begins at that level. A sample size of 360 class eight pupils randomly picked from 18 primary schools of Siaya County participated in the survey. Data collection was by use of attitude questionnaires and, analysed by mixed method approach. Results showed that primary school pupils had positive attitudes towards Kiswahili. The attitudes were due to the communicative and integrative functions of Kiswahili. Pupils however indicated that English remained instrumental to their academic and future pursuits. Consequently, Kiswahili was not accorded the same weight as English, which in turn influenced negatively Kiswahili language learning. The study calls for creation of awareness about the instrumental value of Kiswahili language to learners. This be done, from the early stages of their academic development. Moreover, it recommends that the culture of using grammatical language by learners be encouraged, as much as it is possible. This will serve to improve their Kiswahili language skills and contribute to good performance.

Language Choice for Development: The Case for Swahili in Kenya
(Journal of African Cultural Studies, 2003-06-10) Mohochi, Ernest Sangai
Development, aimed at a general improvement of the quality of life in society, should target the majority and not the minority at the exclusion majority. Attainment of such development, in turn, calls for involvement of in making decisions as well as in the plans for their implementation. They then feel that they own those efforts and participate more enthusiastically in the efforts to achieve stated goals. This calls for an effective communication system to link the government and other development agencies on the one hand, and the public on the other, enabling an appropriate flow of information between the two. If well utilized, the media would play a very significant role in ensuring flow of information. This article examines the role played by the media in to achieve the stated development goals in Kenya. While it would have been more effective to reach people in their first languages, considering the multilingual nature of the Kenyan society, the challenges are many. Fortunately, there is Swahili, a language spoken and understood by many, not only in Kenya, but also in the rest of East and Central Africa. In spite of the potential it has to reach a wider audience, it is not adequately utilized in the media. Language practice in the media relies more on the use of English to communicate important information intended to reach all, irrespective of the first language spoken and knowledge of English. In order not to continue excluding the majority public discourse on development and other national issues, the article calls change in the language policy in the media in Kenya
