Item Diversification Expansion Strategies and Performance of Savings and Credit Co-Operative Societies in Turkana County, Kenya(Cross Current International Journal of Economics, Management and Media Studies, 2020-02-15) Lomuria, Napua Shadrack; Wanyama, Kadian Wanyonyi; Mamuli, Catherine LauraStudies in the Savings and Credit Co-Operative Societies (SACCOs) sector have recently received a lot of attentions globally and locally. The SACCOs have experienced growth and diversification in the range of products and services in the market. The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of expansion strategies and performance of SACCOs in Turkana County, Kenya. The study sought to establish the effect of diversification expansion strategies on performance of SACCOs. The study was anchored on the Resource Based Theory and Igor Ansoff‟s Theory. The research designs of the study were descriptive and correlational research designs. Target population was 234 respondents consisting of thirty-five (35) SACCOs managers and 199 Secretariat drawn from the 35 SACCOs in Turkana County. Purposive and stratified sampling techniques were used. The questionnaire was used as the data collection instrument. This study employed the Cronbach‟s alpha coefficient as a measure of reliability of research instruments at threshold of 0.7 and above. The study used construct validity of the instruments, and content validity to make structured changes for the purpose of improvement and refinement before embarking on the actual data collection process. Data analysis and interpretation was based on descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics using SPSS version 22. Results of the study were that: diversification expansion strategies had a positive, linear and significant (p-value is less than 0.05)association with the performance of SACCOs. Diversification expansion strategies had 53.9% variations on the performance of SACCOs. It was concluded that as the company invests more and implements diversification expansion strategies, the performance of SACCOs would improve. Results showed that diversification expansion strategies were more implemented had more effect on performance of SACCOs than expansion strategies. It was recommended that the management of SACCOs should invest more and implement diversification expansion strategies these strategies had profound effect on the performance of SACCOs. Organizations should upscale investment in diversification expansion strategies since results from other studies do indicate that these strategies improve economies of scale of SACCOs if well implemented. The findings of the study would go a long way in helping the SACCOs in Turkana County to improve their performance through sound and robust strategic management strategies. The study will provide an opportunity for organizations, particularly SACCOs to understand and apply diversification expansion strategies in addressing financial performance challenges. The knowledge gained will be used to improve financial performance of SACCOs in Turkana County, Kenya.Item Downsizing and Performance of Employees in Commercial Banks in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya(The Strategic Journal of Business & Change Management, 2019-08-09) Mukhebi, Hellen Nafula; Wanyama, Kadian Wanyonyi.; Mamuli, Catherine LauraThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of downsizing on employee performance in commercial banks in Trans Nzoia County. The study was guided by Uncertainty Management Theory. Literature was reviewed as per the study objectives. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Target population of the study consisted of 470 employees drawn from 14 commercial banks in Trans Nzoia County. A sample size of 216 of employee was arrived at and stratified simple random sampling used to categorize managers, supervisors/administrators and clerical/tellers. Data was collected using the questionnaires. Validity and reliability of the study instrument were ascertained and results showed that the instrument was valid and reliable. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson Correlation and regression analyses) at 95.0% confidence level (P<0.05). Analysed data was presented in form of frequency tables and percentages. The results indicated that downsizing (r=0.508, p<0.000) had significant effect on the employee performance in commercial banks found in Trans Nzoia County at varied degrees. Downsizing explained up to 49.9 % (R2= 0.499) of the variance in employee performance of commercial banks in Trans Nzoia County. It was established that the management of downsizing affects the performance of employees in commercial banks found in Trans Nzoia County; downsizing threatens job security, thus reducing employee commitment to workforce quality. It was concluded that increase in the management of downsizing would result to increase in employee performance. It was recommended that commercial banks managers should prepare the employees on the downsizing programs and how the organization is expected to regain after the exercise. Those who were victims of downsizing should be prepared psychologically and given full support from the management and the remaining employees. The findings of this study would be beneficial to commercial banks’ management, employees and future researchers on how to handle and prepare for downsizing and understanding its effect on employee performance.Item Effectiveness of grievance management standards in influencing employee work performance(KIBU, 2018-06-12) Butali, Namasaka David; Mamuli, Catherine LauraPublic universities in Kenya have adopted Grievance Management Standards (GMS) as a form of best practices for handling Human Resource operations and administrative functions. Despite this adoption, there are numerous complaints about inefficiency and malpractices in work performance in institutions of higher learning. This study was to establish the effectiveness of grievance management standards in influencing employee work performance in selected public universities in Kenya.The study was carried out in MasindeMuliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), JaramogiOgingaOdinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) and Maseno University. The target population was 213 Heads of Departments from whom the sample of 64 was drawn. The study adopted a mix of descriptive and cross sectional research designs. Research instruments employed were questionnaires and interview schedules for the HROs.Primary and secondary data was collected and triangulated for validity. Data were analyzed using inferential and descriptive statistics. One of the challenges these universities face is academic staff retention. This study sought to establish the influence of selection practices on academic staff retention in Universities in Kenya. The study was conducted in four public and four private universities and data was collected between the period June to September, 2016. The literature was reviewed as per the study objective. The study used mixed method research design. The target population was 2,768 academic staff from 8 (4 public and 4 private) universities. The sample size of 284 (276 departmental academic staff plus 8 (HR) registrars) was drawn. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview schedule.A validity index of 0.80 was obtained. Reliability of the questionnaires was measured and calculated using Cronbach’s alpha and a correlation coefficient of 0.84 was achieved .Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to present data. Pearson correlation on commitment as a moderating variable was done and results showed that commitment affected selection practices significantly with the Pearson’s correlation of 0.4000 and p-value of 0.000. Additionally, commitment did not affect retention significantly with a correlation of 0.021 and p-value of 0.764. The findings of the study revealed that selection practices had an influence on academic staff retention in universities with a frequency of 131 and a percentage of 64.8 %.The overall conclusion of this study is that selection practices had significance influence on academic staff retention in universities in Kenya. The study recommended that universities should review their practices on selection so as to help them to achieve and enhance academic staff retention.Item Physical Violence at Workplace on the Service Quality of Employees of the County Government of Turkana County, Kenya(The Strategic Journal of Business & Change Management, 2019-08-14) Ekuwom, L. P.; Wanyama, Kadian Wanyonyi; Mamuli, Catherine LauraSocietal revelation to all kinds of violence is much more frequent than previous decades due to news broadcasts, movies, video games, television, and books that portray violence vividly. All organizations are vulnerable to workplace violence and this formed the basis for the researcher to carry out a study on physical violence on the service quality of employees in Turkana County. The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of physical violence at workplace on the service quality of employees of the County Government of Turkana County. This study was anchored on the Cognitive Adaptation Theory. The study employed a descriptive survey and correlation designs. The study targeted 2,714 respondents from the ten (10) executive departments of County Government of Turkana as at May 2018. The sampling techniques used were stratified random sampling, simple random sampling and proportionate sampling. A sample size of 349 respondents was obtained from a target population of 2,714 respondents. The questionnaires were the main data collection instruments. These research instruments were tested for both validity and reliability and were found valid and reliable. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22 where descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The study concluded that physical violence at the work place negatively impacts on service quality of employees and the levels of employees incivility affected the levels of productivity at the work place. The study therefore recommended that the Turkana County Government should initiate a psychoeducation on the importance of having good mental health at the work place in order to promote productivity and boost employee’s mental health. Secondly supervisors at the various work places in the County Government of Turkana should address the issue of employee work load.
