Item Application lifecycle management activities for quality assurance in software development(International Journal of Trend in Research and Development, 2017) Otibine, Tobias Okumu; Mbuguah, Samuel; Kilwake, Juma; Tsinale, Harriet LoiceLifecycle Management approaches promise more systematic and efficient ways to support the development and management of complex products. The concept of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) indicates the coordination of activities and the management of artifacts during the software product‟s lifecycle. Most of the currently available unified ALM solutions are either based on basic version control and other 'low level' point-to-point integrations, or advocate the adoption of a new and expensive all-in-one solution from a single vendor. The problem with these current solutions is that the first does not go far enough to really provide the previously described benefits of applying an ALM solution, while the second one is often associated with high costs in tools, infrastructure and personnel which in turn affect the quality of software developed for SME‟s and middle level organizations. This paper discusses the effect of application lifecycle management activities on quality assurance in software development. The research employed multiple case study design. The data collection tools included Questionnaire, Observation and Interviews. ALM activities were found to be a direct predictor of Software quality assurance in software development. However, it has been argued that not the information system solution but their utilization is what provides the competitive advantages. For these information systems to be well utilized and provide the competitive edge for an institution, its users need to be satisfied with systems as satisfaction determines continued use of the system. Satisfaction is the extent to which users believe the information system available to them meets their information requirements. The study sought to understand the relationship between the value users attribute to information systems and the satisfaction users experience with these systems. This study analyzed information systems in two Kenyan universities to find out factors that influence information system user satisfaction. The sample was selected using both purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques. The main instruments for data collection that were used are content analysis and questionnaires. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. This study evaluated satisfaction on software quality attributes basing on the ISO/IEC 9126 software quality model. The findings show that there are a number of factors affecting satisfaction of information systems ranging from institutional factors, individual factors, system factors and infrastructural factors. Information system satisfaction differed significantly across demographic factors like age, gender, mode of study and level of study for students. There was no significant difference in satisfaction between the two universitieItem Influence of social technical factors on ict readiness for primary schools in Bungoma county, Kenya(2015) Batoya, Isaac Barasa; Wabwoba, Franklin; Kilwake, JumaSince the 1980s integration of ICT in education has been compulsory in the developed nations where the access rate is one computer to 15 students. In developing nations such as Kenya it is more recent and experimental with the access rate of one computer to 150 students. Many government efforts and private initiatives tried to address ICT integration in the school level by carving out policies and strategies, providing computers and Internet access. Despite the huge investment in ICT infrastructure, equipment and professional development for teachers by the government and schools, developed countries have reported up to 41% of integration of ICT to teaching and learning, the proportion remains substantially low in Africa, Kenya included. This raises questions as to how well the integration was being done and how ready the environment was, if less than 40% of the available ICT infrastructure were being used. The purpose of the study was to analyze the influence of social technical factors on ICT Readiness for Primary Schools. The study established that for one to integrate ICT in schools, ICT usefulness, leadership support, professional development and technical support should be put in place. The study recommended that education stakeholders in the county should train all the teachers on how to integrate technology in teaching, guarantee technical support to ICT infrastructure, ensure leadership support and develop an elaborate professional development programme for educators.Item Information security risks posed by the bluetooth security weaknesses to the bluetooth-enabled phones(Journal of Emerging Trends in Computing and Information Sciences, 2015) Wanjala, Chrispus Kimingichi; Mbuguah, Samuel Mungai; Kilwake, JumaAs the widespread use and acceptance of Bluetooth technology increases, concerns are being raised related to security vulnerabilities of this technology. Inadequate device resources and lack of user awareness has compounded this issue where the emphasis on design constraints, functionality and ease of use sometimes outweigh security concerns. The research determines vulnerability of Bluetooth security and the security risks these vulnerabilities poses to the users’ information stored in Bluetooth-enabled phones. The research design was based on multi-case study where two cases were selected. Questionnaires and interview were used in data collection. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in data analysis. Descriptive statistical method was used for data analysis. The key findings from the study were that to improve security of information stored in Bluetooth-enabled phones, application layer security should be employed to provide additional security measures not provided in the current authentication and authorization process. Secondly the E0 encryption algorithm currently used for encryption is too weak and therefore the DES and AES algorithm should be used due to their efficiency and reliability. Lastly it was found out that most users have no knowledge on how to configure these devices thus manufactures of these devices should provide users with user documentation that explains the use and device configurations.Item Teaching computer programming in the 21st century(International Journal of Science and Technology, 2011) Mutua, Stephen; Wabwoba, Franklin; Abenga, Elizabeth; Kilwake, Juma; Ogao, PatrickOver the years, research has shown that programming has proved to be a challenging task to many. Due to this, several program visualization tools have been developed to aid in teaching programming. This study aimed at assessing the impact of using programming visualization tools in the teaching and learning of computer Programming. An overview of the tools that were used during the study is given followed by review of literature on the benefits of PV tools in teaching Programming. The study is based on Edga Dale’s (1954) Cone of Experience, which forms the foundation of resource based learning theories. Literature reveals that the use of program visualization tools in teaching and learning Programming have posted positive results in various institutions. This is followed by a report of a study conducted using experimental research design approach. The same class was taught two programming introductory courses using BlueJ and Jeliot3 tools; and the performance of the students in the two courses was compared. In addition, during the classes, the covert-direct observation method was used to observe student interactions’ and behaviors as they programmed and solved problems during the lessons. Results revealed that these tools if effectively used can improve on the alertness of students, interest in the subject and ultimately positive results.Item Use of low cost wireless communication technology for education in rural Kenya(ACM, 2010-06-15) Mayeku, Betty; Kilwake, Juma; Bertarelli, FabioWith the advent of mobile revolution, the emerging mobile technologies can support a broad range of learning activities on a variety of mobile devices, a concept referred to as mobile learning. The combination of wireless communication technology and mobile computing is resulting in rapid transformations of the educational world. This paper explores the use of low cost wireless technology in combination with other existing technologies to bring education to rural and pastoralist tribes in Kenya who would otherwise not have access to education.
